What is Internal Family Systems
(IFS)

Internal Family Systems?
(IFS)
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a transformative approach developed by Richard Schwartz that conceptualizes the mind as a system of distinct subpersonalities or "parts," each with its own unique emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Some of these parts may feel hurt or lost, while others might try to protect us from pain.
You might notice:
-
A part that feels anxious or overwhelmed
-
A part that tries to stay in control
-
A part that avoids or shuts down
-
A part that is hard on yourself
-
A part that just wants to rest, connection, or peace.
These parts aren’t problems; they are trying to help, even if their ways of helping feel exhausting or confusing.
What is the “Self”?
Beneath all of these parts is your Self. This is the steady, grounded core of who you are.
Your Self possesses the 8 C’s of IFS: calm, curiosity, compassion, clarity, confidence, courage, creativity, and connectedness.
Even if it doesn’t feel accessible right now, it’s always there.
In our work together, we’ll gently:
-
Get to know your different parts
-
Understand what they’re protecting or carrying
-
Create space between you and overwhelming feelings
-
Help your parts feel seen, heard, and less alone.
This isn’t about fixing you. It’s about helping you understand yourself, with compassion, so every part of you can begin to feel a little safer.
